A seasonal nursery aggregation of juvenile whale sharks, 3-6m animals, much smaller than the adults elsewhere, in numbers, in a plankton-rich bay. Because they are young they are curious and unhurried. Almost nobody comes here, so you are often alone with them. Djibouti sits at the Afar Triple Junction where three tectonic plates pull apart, the Gulf of Tadjoura is a rift valley flooding in real time, and in a few million years this will be an ocean. The whale shark nursery was only documented by researchers in the 2000s, and remains one of the most important juvenile aggregations known. Anchorage: Anchor in Arta Bay or Ghoubbet; Djibouti has a functioning port and marina. Hazards: Regional travel advisories apply to parts of the Horn of Africa, check current guidance for Djibouti before routing.
