Costa Rica's most reliable Pacific reef diving without the Cocos commitment, rock pinnacles with whitetip reef sharks, big schools, turtles and rays, and humpback whales in the channel on the way out. The island holds pre-Columbian stone spheres, which is why nobody may land. A pre-Columbian burial and ceremonial site for the Diquís culture, whose perfectly round stone spheres, some over two metres across and still unexplained, were carried here across open water. The island has been a biological reserve since 1978 and archaeological protection is why landing is banned. Anchorage: Anchor in Drake Bay; the island is 10nm offshore. Hazards: Landing is banned to protect the archaeological sites; stay in the water.
