A 150m tuff monolith split into two towers rising sheer out of open ocean, with a channel between them you snorkel or dive, hammerheads, Galápagos sharks, sea turtles, eagle rays and sea lions in the gap. Blue-footed boobies and frigatebirds nest on the walls above. Sunset light on the rock from the water is extraordinary. The eroded remnant of a submarine volcanic cone. The Spanish name means 'sleeping lion' for its profile; the English name came from whalers. San Cristóbal was Darwin's first landfall in the archipelago in September 1835. Anchorage: Anchor at Puerto Baquerizo Moreno; the rock is a guided day trip. Hazards: Strong channel current; guided only under park rules.
