Fields of table coral growing at 33 degrees north, the northernmost in the world, mixed with soft coral and temperate fish that have no business alongside them, plus the rock stacks of Hashigui-iwa standing out of the sea above. Kushimoto's corals were listed under the Ramsar Convention in 2005, unusual for a coral site in a temperate country. The town is also where the Ottoman frigate Ertuğrul was wrecked in 1890 and the villagers saved 69 of her crew, a story that still underpins Turkish-Japanese relations. Anchorage: Anchor at Kushimoto between the mainland and Kii-Oshima, at the southern tip of Honshu. Hazards: Typhoons in late summer, and current through the strait.
