A protected saltwater lagoon just inside Boca Inlet that becomes one of the largest raft-ups in Florida at weekends, hundreds of boats tied together in flat, shallow, warm water with the pink Boca Raton Resort tower on the shore. Manatees in winter. The lake and inlet were shaped by Addison Mizner's 1920s development of Boca Raton, whose Cloister Inn, the pink landmark still on the shore, helped invent the Florida resort aesthetic. The name means 'rat's mouth', an old Spanish nautical term for a jagged harbour entrance. Anchorage: Anchor in 1.5-3m in the lake. Sheltered and calm, but the weekend boat density is extreme and anchoring room disappears by midday. Hazards: Boca Inlet is narrow, shoals badly and has a low bridge, many boats reach the lake from the Intracoastal instead. Check your air draught.
