Not a pretty reef, black volcanic sand, and the strangest animals in the ocean living on it. Mimic octopus, hairy frogfish, flamboyant cuttlefish, blue-ringed octopus, wonderpus, Bobbit worms, pygmy seahorses, mandarinfish mating at dusk. This is where macro photography was invented as a genre. Lembeh was written off by divers as ugly until the 1990s, when photographers realised the volcanic silt hosted a density of bizarre, camouflaged species found nowhere else. The word 'muck diving' was effectively coined here. Anchorage: Sheltered strait anchorages both sides; Bitung port nearby. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
