One of the longest surveyed underwater cave systems in the world, over 10km mapped, with a sharp halocline where fresh water floats on salt, stalactites, and shafts of daylight at the entrances where you can swim without cave training. Blind cave fish and endemic crustaceans found nowhere else. Divers found Lucayan skeletal remains and artefacts in the caverns in the 1980s, the Lucayan people used them for burial and fresh water before Spanish contact wiped them out within decades of 1492. The system was mapped from 1979 and the national park created to protect it. Anchorage: Anchor off the Grand Bahama south shore or berth at Port Lucaya; the park is inland with two open cave entrances. Hazards: Ben's Cave is closed part of the summer to protect a bat maternity colony, check before promising it.
