One of the very few reliable places on earth to snorkel with dugongs, 3m sea cows grazing a shallow seagrass meadow, hoovering up rhizomes in clouds of sand. Green turtles in numbers, guitar sharks on the sand, and a bay shallow and calm enough for anyone. The Red Sea dugong population is small and fragmented; Abu Dabbab's seagrass meadow supports a handful of individuals that have become famous, and crowding pressure has repeatedly driven them out of the bay. Egypt introduced guidelines and boat limits in response. See it, but see it quietly. Anchorage: Anchor in the bay in sand, avoid the seagrass, which is the whole reason the animals are there. Hazards: Keep well clear of dugongs and never block their path to the surface; the bay's guidelines exist because tourist crowding drove animals away.
