A pastel stone village facing west over seven small islets, with the only west-facing sunset harbour in central Dalmatia, an 18th-century castle turned marina, and olive groves running to the water. Šolta gets a fraction of the traffic of its famous neighbours. The Martinis Marchi castle was built in 1703 as a fortified refuge against Ottoman and pirate raids, and the village grew around it. Šolta's olive oil and Dobričić wine, a parent grape of Plavac Mali, have been produced here since Roman times. Anchorage: Šešula inlet is a well-sheltered natural hole with konobas on the shore; Maslinica has a marina in a restored 18th-century castle. Hazards: Open to westerly swell; Šešula inlet next door is the bolt-hole.
