An 25m waterfall dropping straight onto a beach in a turquoise cove, one of very few tidefalls in the world, seen the way almost nobody sees it, from the water, with the Santa Lucia range going straight up behind it and condors overhead. The cove took its present shape after a 1983 landslide dumped enough material to build the beach the falls now land on; before that the water fell straight into the sea. The land was given to the state in 1962 by Helen Hooper Brown and named for a Big Sur pioneer. Anchorage: There is no anchorage. Big Sur is a passage, not a stop, leave from Monterey and make San Simeon or Morro Bay, and look at the falls on the way past in settled weather. Hazards: A famously unforgiving coast, no shelter for 60nm, swell against cliffs, and fog that arrives in minutes. Do not close the cliffs without room to get out.
