A cave lake whose roof collapsed thousands of years ago, so at midday sunlight drops straight down onto brackish water and the boat appears to hover in mid-air over a visible bottom 20-30m below. The blue is not an exaggeration. Excavated in 1951, when archaeologists found a 4th-century BC sanctuary to the god Pan on the interior island, clay figurines of Pan and nymphs, and a plate depicting dancing nymphs, are now in the Argostoli museum. The lake is fed by seawater that travels underground from Katavothres on the far side of the island, a flow proven by dye tests in 1963. Anchorage: Anchor in Sami bay, an excellent Ionian anchorage; the cave is a short drive inland. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
