Pelagic threshers rising out of deep water onto the plateau at dawn to be cleaned, their scythe tails as long as their bodies, passing a few metres in front of a line of kneeling divers. Manta and devil rays use the same cleaning stations, and the shoal edge drops into open blue. Monad Shoal is a sunken island whose top sits at 25m, and the thresher behaviour was only recognised by local divers in the late 1990s. Malapascua was flattened by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 and rebuilt on the back of these sharks, which is why the protection is taken seriously here. Anchorage: Anchor off Logon on Malapascua's south shore; the shoal is a 30-minute run out. Hazards: Pre-dawn boat run, depth at the end of a cold early dive, and a strict no-chasing rule that operators enforce.
