A 175m volcanic plug standing at the harbour mouth, the last of a chain of nine ancient volcanic peaks running inland, with sea otters working the eelgrass in the channel and peregrines nesting on the rock itself. Charted by Cabrillo in 1542, who used the rock as a landmark exactly as boats still do. It was quarried for decades to build the breakwaters that now shelter the harbour, which is why its seaward side is cut flat, and has been a state historic landmark since 1968. Anchorage: Anchor in the marked area inside the sandspit in 4-8m, mud and sand, or take a harbour mooring. The bar decides when you come and go, not you. Hazards: The entrance bar breaks in a westerly swell and has drowned people; call the harbour patrol and time it. Inside, the channel shoals and the tide runs.
