Sixteen miles of fluted green cliffs up to 1,200m high, cut by hanging valleys and waterfalls, with sea caves you can take a tender into, including the Open Ceiling Cave with a waterfall falling through a hole in its roof. Spinner dolphins in the mornings, monk seals on the beaches. There is no road; the only ways in are boat, kayak or an 11-mile trail. These valleys held Hawaiian settlements for a thousand years, Nualolo Kai has terraces, house sites and heiau still visible. Kalalau was farmed into the 1920s. The fluting comes from erosion of a 5-million-year-old shield volcano, the oldest of the main Hawaiian islands. Anchorage: Summer only (May-Sep), the north shore is unapproachable in winter swell. Permits required for landings at Kalalau and Nualolo Kai. Hazards: Late afternoon light on the cliffs from the water is the shot; whales Dec-Apr but the coast is closed by swell then.
