Japan's Galápagos, an oceanic archipelago 540nm from Tokyo with 40m visibility, spinner and bottlenose dolphins you can swim with, humpbacks calving in spring, sperm whales offshore in summer, and endemic species found nowhere else. Sunken WWII wrecks in the shallows of Futami Bay. Uninhabited until 1830, when a mixed group of Americans, Europeans and Hawaiians settled it, their descendants still live there and some families kept English for generations. Under US administration until 1968. UNESCO World Heritage in 2011 for its endemic evolution. Iwo Jima lies in the same island group. Anchorage: Futami Bay, Chichijima, a genuine ocean-passage landfall and the only real shelter for hundreds of miles. Hazards: Extremely remote to 540nm from Tokyo with limited medical facilities and no chamber. Typhoon season Jul-Oct.
