A man-made island with a purpose-built snorkel lagoon behind a rock breakwater, clear water, small reef fish, rays and manatees in winter, plus, ashore, the declassified nuclear fallout bunker built for President Kennedy in 1961, ten minutes from his Palm Beach home. Created in 1918 from dredge spoil when the Lake Worth Inlet was cut, and named for a peanut-oil shipping venture that failed. The Navy built the Detachment Hotel bunker here in secret after the Bay of Pigs; it remained classified until the 1970s. Anchorage: Popular sheltered anchorage just inside the inlet with a designated snorkel lagoon and beach; strong tidal current in the channel. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
