Three thousand amphorae lying in a ship-shaped mound on the seabed, the cargo of a 5th-century BC merchant vessel exactly where it settled 2,400 years ago. One of the largest classical cargoes ever found, and until 2020 no sport diver had ever been allowed near it. Greece banned recreational diving on almost all of its seabed until 2005 to stop looting, and its ancient wrecks stayed off-limits far longer. Peristera opened in 2020 as the country's first underwater museum, with the Alonissos Marine Park (also Europe's largest marine protected area, created for the Mediterranean monk seal) managing access. Anchorage: Anchor off Alonissos; the wreck is a short boat run and requires a licensed operator. Hazards: A protected classical site. Nothing may be touched or moved, and dives are guided and counted.
