The emptiest cruising ground in the Bahamas, 110 miles of uninhabited cays with white beaches, some of the best remaining conch and lobster in the country, and nights so dark the Milky Way casts a visible glow on the water. Hog Cay has a cruisers' beach hut built up over decades. The chain supported salt production and fishing until hurricanes and economics emptied it; Hurricane Irma flattened Duncan Town in 2017 and the population is now in double figures. Cruising sailors have kept the chain alive as a passage route, maintaining the Hog Cay hut themselves. Anchorage: A 110-mile chain of cays running south-east from Great Exuma with dozens of empty sand anchorages on the bank side. Duncan Town on Ragged Island is the only settlement. Hazards: Almost no services, no reliable fuel, poor charts and 80nm from the nearest town. A westerly front leaves you no shelter. Serious remote-cruising ground.
