A shallow turquoise bank you can read by eye, sand holding that actually holds, and the rock ledges at the west end of the bay where the old sailors' inscriptions are carved. The whole Caicos Bank is a lagoon the size of a county, mostly under 5 metres. The Caicos Bank is one of the largest shallow banks in the Atlantic and was a salt-raking economy for two centuries before tourism. It remains a route of choice for boats hopping between the Bahamas and the Greater Antilles. Anchorage: Sapodilla and Taylor Bay hold 3-6m over sand with good holding right up to the beach, which is why cruising guides make this the default Providenciales anchorage. Cooper Jack Bay and the lee of Bay Cay are the alternatives when the wind backs. Hazards: Anchor on sand only, coral and seagrass are protected across the Turks and Caicos and damaging them carries real penalties. The bank is shallow and eyeball navigation is the norm.
