A limestone dome enclosing a deep, daylight-lit swimming chamber, with a submerged tunnel leading to a second pitch-dark chamber you duck-dive through with a torch. Outside, a chain of volcanic islands with white beaches and villages where sevusevu, the kava presentation to the chief, is still the way you ask permission to anchor. Sawa-i-Lau is held sacred; the cave is said to have been the home of the Fijian god Ulutini and traditional burial site of chiefs. The Yasawas were closed to overnight visitors until 1987. 'The Blue Lagoon' was filmed in these islands in both 1949 and 1980. Anchorage: A 90km chain of islands with sheltered anchorages on the lee side throughout, one of the South Pacific's most practical cruising grounds. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
