The southernmost true coral reefs on earth, kept alive by the warm Agulhas Current running down this coast, Two-Mile, Five-Mile and Seven-Mile reefs, with ragged-tooth sharks, potato bass, turtles and manta rays. The canyons offshore hold coelacanths, filmed here in 2000 at around 100m. Coelacanths were thought extinct for 65 million years until one was landed off East London in 1938. In 2000 South African technical divers found a living population in the Sodwana canyons, a few miles from a beach where people learn to dive. Anchorage: No anchorage, this is a beach-launch coast. Richards Bay is the nearest harbour for a cruising boat. Hazards: Surf launch in a rubber duck, and an exposed coast with no shelter. The reefs are named by distance from the launch, and the far ones are a long wet ride.
