An entire Egyptian port city on the seabed to 5m colossal statues of Hapi, pharaohs and Ptolemaic queens, a temple of Amun-Gereb, hundreds of anchors, 70 shipwrecks, gold jewellery and stelae with hieroglyphic inscriptions. The scale is unmatched by any submerged site anywhere. Egypt's main Mediterranean port before Alexandria was founded, where Cleopatra was likely crowned. It sank in the 2nd century BC through a combination of earthquake, rising sea level and liquefaction of the Nile delta clay it was built on, and was then lost so completely that scholars doubted it existed. Franck Goddio's IEASM located it in 2000, the most important underwater archaeological discovery ever made. Anchorage: Abu Qir Bay; Alexandria harbour. NOTE, this is an active archaeological site, public diving is heavily restricted. Verify access before listing it as visitable. Hazards: NOTE, this is an active archaeological site, public diving is heavily restricted.
