Nearly 100 charted wrecks in one sanctuary, including several, the Portland, the Nordmeer, the Shamrock, sitting in 2-6m where you can see whole hulls, masts and deck timbers from a kayak. Wooden schooners preserved by cold fresh water look like they sank last year. Called 'Shipwreck Alley' for its fog, shoals and sudden gales. Designated a national marine sanctuary in 2000 and expanded in 2014, the only place in the world where you can paddle over an intact 19th-century schooner. Anchorage: Alpena and Rogers City harbours; the sanctuary covers 4,300 square miles of Lake Huron. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
