A resident pod of bottlenose dolphins that surf the standing wave in the pass and interact with divers deliberately, they come to you. Plus grey reef and silvertip sharks stacked in the current, huge Napoleon wrasse, marbled rays, and in winter great hammerheads and manta. Rangiroa's lagoon is so big the far side is over the horizon. Rangiroa is the second-largest atoll in the world, its lagoon could hold the island of Tahiti. The Tiputa dolphins have been studied and individually identified for decades; their surfing of the pass wave appears to be play rather than feeding. Also home to the only vineyard on a coral atoll. Anchorage: Anchor inside the Rangiroa lagoon near the pass; the pass itself runs to 6kt and must be dived on the incoming tide. Hazards: Anchor inside the Rangiroa lagoon near the pass; the pass itself runs to 6kt and must be dived on the incoming tide.
