The furthest north-west point of the lower 48, where the cliffs are undercut into caves and arches, Tatoosh Island stands offshore with its lighthouse, and sea otters, puffins and grey whales work the kelp along a coast with no road to it. Makah country, continuously occupied for millennia; the tribe's Ozette village nearby was buried by a mudslide and preserved, and what came out of it is in the museum at Neah Bay. Cook named the cape in 1778, and the light on Tatoosh went up in 1857. Anchorage: Neah Bay is the only shelter and the base for everything here. Nobody lies off the cape. Hazards: One of the more serious pieces of water on the American coast, ocean swell meeting tidal streams out of the strait, fog, and no shelter. Sea caves in swell are a place to die in. Go with a flat sea, local advice and a way out.
