A cave entrance at around 10m opening into chambers with stalactites and stalagmites that formed in air, now under the sea, and the fossil bones and tusks of dwarf elephants and deer that walked in when the cave was dry and the Mediterranean was far lower. The cave was above water during the last ice age, when sea level was more than a hundred metres lower and Crete's dwarf elephants sheltered in it. It flooded as the sea rose. A local diver found it in 1999 and Greek palaeontologists have worked it since, which is why access is controlled. Anchorage: Anchor off the Drepano headland in settled weather; Souda and Chania are the harbours. Hazards: A true overhead environment with a silt floor and fossil material that must not be touched. Guided cave-trained dives only.
