A man-made island with a 33m obelisk in the middle of Biscayne Bay, ringed by a shallow sand beach, with the downtown Miami skyline on one side and Star Island's mansions on the other. The most convenient raft-up in Miami and the best sunset view in the bay. Built in 1920 as a memorial to Henry Flagler, the railroad magnate whose Florida East Coast Railway created Miami. Marble tablets and four sculpted figures surround the obelisk. It has been repeatedly vandalised and restored, and is now managed by the City of Miami Beach. Anchorage: Anchor in 1.5-3m sand off the beach. Sheltered from swell but exposed to wake from the Venetian and Miami Beach channels. Hazards: Shoals around the island, approach slowly and watch your draught.
