Green turtles at arm's length on shore dives, lava arches and drop-offs, hammerheads and big pelagics on the current, and in winter the water still holds 17 degrees this far out in the Kuroshio. Hachijojima was an exile island under the Tokugawa shogunate, where disgraced samurai and, later, political prisoners were sent. It is one of the Izu Islands, all volcanic, all administered from Tokyo despite being hundreds of kilometres away. Anchorage: Hachijojima is 150nm south of Tokyo in open ocean, the harbours are small and swell-prone, and the ferry is overnight. Hazards: Shore entries onto lava in swell, and the Kuroshio runs hard past the island.
