From the air, sand and silt being drawn off the edge of the Mauritian shelf creates the convincing illusion of an enormous waterfall pouring off the underwater cliff into the abyss. One of the great aerial images on earth. At sea level, a turquoise lagoon under a 556m basalt monolith, and world-class kitesurfing. Le Morne Brabant is a UNESCO World Heritage site as a symbol of maroon resistance, escaped enslaved people took refuge on its inaccessible summit, and legend holds that some threw themselves from the cliff in 1835 rather than surrender, not knowing slavery had been abolished. The 'waterfall' is a genuine sediment flow off a real underwater cliff, just not falling water. Anchorage: Anchor inside the lagoon off Le Morne in 3-8m sand; the illusion is visible only from the air. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
