Sailors call it the Kodak Gap, a 1.6km-wide, 11km-long channel between 1,000m cliffs and glaciers, so still that the mountains reflect perfectly and the only sound is ice cracking. Humpback and minke whales feeding, leopard seals on floes, gentoo colonies, and light that photographers spend careers chasing. Charted by a Belgian expedition in 1898 and named for a Belgian explorer. Port Lockroy nearby was a secret British WWII base (Operation Tabarin) and is now a museum and post office staffed each summer. Peninsula tourism is self-regulated through IAATO, with strict landing caps and biosecurity. Anchorage: IAATO membership and expedition-grade vessel required. Ice pilot essential, the channel closes with pack ice without warning. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
