Vertical villages stacked above the sea, the Li Galli islets (once Rudolf Nureyev's private islands, and Homer's mythical home of the Sirens), the Grotta dello Smeraldo at Conca dei Marini, and the best sunset light in Italy hitting Positano's face from the water. Li Galli was owned by ballet choreographer Léonide Massine and then Nureyev, who kept a tiled Moorish room there. The Amalfi Republic was one of medieval Italy's four great maritime powers. UNESCO World Heritage since 1997. Anchorage: Exposed to south and west; Amalfi and Positano roadsteads are rolly. Marina di Stabia/Salerno are the bolt-holes. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
