The world's southernmost coral reef, where tropical and temperate species overlap so you see coral and kelp on the same dive, with 500 fish species and 10% endemism. Then Ball's Pyramid, a 562m volcanic spire rising sheer from the ocean 12nm offshore, the tallest sea stack on earth, with Ballina angelfish and huge kingfish schools around its base. UNESCO World Heritage since 1982. Ball's Pyramid is where the Lord Howe Island stick insect, declared extinct for 80 years, was rediscovered in 2001 clinging to a single melaleuca bush, and bred back from two pairs. The island caps its own tourist beds and has no traffic lights. Anchorage: Anchor in the lagoon on the west side; exposed to westerlies with limited shelter. Visitor numbers capped at 400 at any time. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
