The channel between the islands, The Narrows, was where the British fleet anchored during the 1782 Battle of Frigate Bay. Nevis was once the richest sugar island in the Caribbean and the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton; the ballast stones on the seabed came from ships that arrived empty to load sugar.
