A steel island in the middle of a featureless sand plain, and the fish know it, the densest fish life of any wreck on earth. Giant Queensland groper, marble rays the size of dining tables, schooling barracuda and trevally, sea snakes, turtles, bull sharks. 122 recorded species. Penetration is prohibited, it's a grave. Left Mackay on 23 March 1911 into an uncharted cyclone with no wireless aboard and vanished with all 122 people, a racehorse named Moonshine and a prize Lincolnshire bull. The wreck wasn't positively identified until 1958. Protected under the Historic Shipwrecks Act. Anchorage: Exposed offshore site 48nm from Townsville; mooring, strong current, advanced only. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
