An uninhabited national park atoll where the only people are two seasonal caretakers, and passing yachts are the entire social scene. Manta rays and reef sharks in the pass, coconut crabs on the motus, and frigatebird colonies. The visitors' book goes back decades. Tom Neale lived alone here for a total of 16 years between 1952 and 1977 and wrote 'An Island to Oneself', one of the great books of voluntary solitude; his hut still stands. Robert Dean Frisbie sat out a 1942 hurricane here in a tree with his four children. Declared a national park in 1978. Anchorage: A genuine mid-ocean atoll anchorage 500nm from anywhere, open roughly Apr-Oct when caretakers are stationed. Coral heads, buoy your chain. Hazards: Closed in cyclone season.
