Rock reefs and small walls with moray, seahorses and rays, a handful of small wrecks, and above the water a national park where the Sierra Nevada rises to 5,700m within sight of the anchorage. Santa Marta is the oldest surviving Spanish city in Colombia, founded in 1525, and Simón Bolívar died just outside it. Tayrona is named for the Tairona people, whose terraced Ciudad Perdida sits in the mountains above the coast. Anchorage: Santa Marta has a full marina and Tayrona's bays are day anchorages beneath the Sierra Nevada, the highest coastal mountain range on earth, snow-capped 40km from the beach. Hazards: December to March brings strong trades and swell onto this coast.
