Two tidewater glaciers, Sawyer and South Sawyer, calving into a fjord full of blue ice with harbour seals hauled out on the floes to pup, mountain goats on the walls above, and waterfalls dropping the full 900m. Humpbacks bubble-net feeding in Stephens Passage on the way in. Part of Tongass National Forest, the largest national forest in the US. John Muir explored these fjords in 1879 by canoe with Tlingit guides and effectively invented Alaskan tourism by writing about them. The glaciers have retreated substantially in the last century, the fjord itself is the record of it. Anchorage: A 40km fjord with 900m walls; icebergs restrict approach to the glacier face. Fords Terror's entrance is passable only at slack water. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
