A triangular lagoon of graded turquoise dotted with sand motus, so shallow you can wade for hundreds of metres. One Foot Island (Tapuaetai) has a sand spit and a post office that stamps your passport with the world's smallest official stamp. Giant trevally and eagle rays on the flats. Aitutaki's lagoon was used as a flying-boat staging post on the 1950s Coral Route between Fiji and Tahiti, passengers swam in the lagoon while the aircraft refuelled, the most glamorous stopover in aviation history. The name Tapuaetai means 'one footprint' from a legend of a father and son fleeing warriors. Anchorage: Arutanga's pass and harbour take shallow-draught vessels only, verify draught limits before committing. Larger yachts anchor outside and tender in. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
