The concrete Phoenix caissons of Mulberry B, towed across the Channel in June 1944 and sunk to make a harbour where there was none, now broken into a reef of concrete blocks with conger and lobster in them, plus landing craft, tanks and blockships scattered along the beaches. The Allies could not capture a port, so they brought one, two prefabricated harbours towed from England in sections. The American Mulberry at Omaha was destroyed by the storm of 19 June 1944; the British one at Arromanches worked for ten months and landed over two million men. Much of it is still on the seabed and above it at low water. Anchorage: No anchorage at Arromanches itself; Port-en-Bessin and Courseulles are the shelter on this coast. Hazards: Cold, low visibility, strong tidal streams and unexploded ordnance. Dive it with a Normandy operator who knows the tide windows.
