Widely called the most beautiful anchorage in the world, a narrow bay ringed by eroded basalt spires draped in green, with a village of 300 at its head and no road out. Waterfalls inland, wild horses, and the smell of tiare after rain. For anyone crossing the Pacific it is the first land in three weeks. The missionaries renamed it Baie des Vierges, Bay of Virgins, after allegedly adding an 'i' to Baie des Verges (Bay of Phalluses), which is what the basalt spires suggested to the French. Thor Heyerdahl lived on Fatu Hiva in 1936-37, and the experience led directly to the Kon-Tiki expedition. Anchorage: Deep bay with steep sides; a swell can make it uncomfortable. Landfall bay for boats arriving from the Galápagos. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
