A 360ft freighter broken open along the reef in 7-13m, with the bow section largely intact and hull plates and ribs spread across sand. Dense fish life, massive schools of grunt and snapper, moray eels, and it is the best night dive in the Upper Keys. One of the strangest wreck stories on the trail, in April 1942, running blacked out to avoid German U-boats, the Benwood collided with another blacked-out ship, the Robert C. Tuttle, and was run aground. Salvage crews and wartime demolition finished the job. Both captains were doing exactly the right thing. Anchorage: Sanctuary mooring buoys on French Reef; Key Largo is the base. Hazards: Shallow, broken and surge-prone; watch for boat traffic.
