A vast triangular bank in the middle of the Straits of Florida with a handful of tiny cays, 40m visibility, walls dropping into the Gulf Stream, and reefs that see almost no divers in a year. Sharks, huge grouper and untouched coral, the fish here genuinely have not learned to fear people. Bahamian territory but far closer to Cuba, the bank has served as a wrecking ground, a smuggling waypoint and a refugee route. Lighthouses on Elbow Cay and Damas Cays mark the reefs that wrecked ships for centuries. Almost no systematic marine survey has been done here. Anchorage: A 60-mile triangular bank with a handful of small cays. Anchoring is settled-weather only, and there is nothing and nobody for 50 miles. Hazards: Utterly remote with no services, no shelter from most directions, strong currents, and it sits in a heavily patrolled corridor between Cuba and Florida. Passage planning and paperwork both need care.
