A well-preserved wooden prahm, a sunken sailing yacht, the Docktor, and further out a two-master, a three-master, a schooner and an armed WWII patrol boat, wooden hulls that would have been eaten to nothing in salt water. The Baltic is too brackish for the shipworm that destroys wooden wrecks everywhere else, so ships from the medieval period to the Second World War survive here with their timbers intact. Around Rügen alone some 300 wrecks are charted, and the whole sea is among the most wreck-dense on earth. Anchorage: Orth and Burgstaaken on Fehmarn are the shelter, with Heiligenhafen across the Sound; this is the main Baltic route from Kiel towards Denmark. Hazards: Cold, low visibility and busy shipping through the Fehmarnbelt. Dive from a boat that is showing the right signals.
