Three hundred and sixty-five islands, most no bigger than a tennis court with three palm trees, inside a barrier reef. Guna families paddle ulu canoes out to sell molas, hand-stitched reverse-appliqué textiles, and lobster. Coral, no development, no resorts, and some of the least-visited water in the Caribbean. The Guna people won autonomy from Panama in the 1925 Dule Revolution and govern the comarca themselves, foreign land ownership and resort development are prohibited, which is exactly why it looks like this. They also decide the rules for visiting yachts; respect them and the welcome is genuine. Anchorage: Hundreds of reef-protected anchorages across 365 islands. Poorly charted, daylight, good light and a bow watch. Cruising permits and island fees paid to Guna authorities. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
