A bay often called one of the world's most beautiful, with a red-roofed Breton-Caribbean village, Fort Napoléon on the hill, and Pain de Sucre, a volcanic dome with snorkelling around its base. Green turtles in the anchorage, French bakeries ashore, and no cruise ships. Settled by Breton and Norman fishermen rather than plantation labour, so the culture and the boats (the saintoise fishing skiff) are distinct from the rest of the Caribbean. The Battle of the Saintes in 1782, Admiral Rodney breaking the French line here, helped keep Britain in the Caribbean. Anchorage: Well sheltered bay, one of the best in the Leewards. Moorings mandatory in much of the bay to protect turtle grass. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
