One of only a handful of stingless-jellyfish lakes on earth, four species, including an upside-down jellyfish that lies on its back on the bottom. You snorkel a landlocked lake inside a raised atoll. Next door, Sangalaki has resident manta rays feeding in the shallows and one of Indonesia's biggest green turtle rookeries. Kakaban's lake was cut off when the atoll was uplifted around 10,000 years ago; the isolation produced jellyfish that lost their sting, in a parallel evolution to Palau's Jellyfish Lake thousands of miles away. Derawan was proposed for UNESCO listing and remains one of Indonesia's least-visited marine areas. Anchorage: Anchor off Kakaban and Sangalaki; remote Kalimantan cruising with minimal services. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
