One of the few places on earth where killer whales pass within metres of a shoreline you can stand on, the water off the point drops away immediately, so the whales hunt salmon along the rocks below the old lighthouse. Named for the lime kilns worked here in the nineteenth century, whose ruins are still in the woods, and lit in 1919. It became the first park in the world set aside specifically for watching whales from the shore, and hydrophones there have recorded the resident pods for decades. Anchorage: No anchorage. Lie in Friday Harbor or Roche Harbor and come by road, or stand well off in the strait. Hazards: Strong tidal streams and a rock shore with no shelter. Vessel rules around Southern Resident killer whales are strict, keep the required distance, and do not position yourself in their path.
