The blue is not an exaggeration. Excavated in 1951, when archaeologists found a 4th-century BC sanctuary to the god Pan on the interior island, clay figurines of Pan and nymphs, and a plate depicting dancing nymphs, are now in the Argostoli museum. The lake is fed by seawater that travels underground from Katavothres on the far side of the island, a flow proven by dye tests in 1963.
