Vertical walls dropping into the Pemba Channel with visibility that regularly runs past 30 metres, turtles, big groupers, napoleon wrasse and hammerheads out in the blue, plus Misali itself, an uninhabited island with a turtle beach and coconut crabs. Pemba is the clove island, and its wealth came from spice rather than tourism, which is why the diving arrived late. Misali is sacred in local tradition, one story has the Prophet praying here, and the community-managed conservation area was set up so fishers, not outsiders, run the protection. Anchorage: The Pemba Channel and the bays behind Misali give shelter; Pemba is a genuine offshore cruising stop, 30nm from Zanzibar across deep water. Hazards: Serious drift diving on the channel walls, and Pemba's medical evacuation options are limited.
