The only warm-temperate soft coral forest in Korean waters, walls of orange, yellow and pink soft coral fed by the Tsushima Current, with schooling damselfish and seasonal tropical strays that shouldn't be this far north. Korea protects the reef as a Natural Monument. The Tsushima branch of the Kuroshio pushes warm water up past Jeju, which is why a subtropical coral community survives at 33 degrees north. Seogwipo's dive scene grew out of the haenyeo tradition of women free-diving for abalone and seaweed, still practised on the island and listed by UNESCO. Anchorage: Anchor or berth at Seogwipo; Munseom, Beomseom and Seopseom all lie within a couple of miles. Hazards: The tide turns hard around the island and sets in different directions through the day; go with a local guide.
